Urban Water Agenda

Why an Urban Water Agenda 2030?

"To commit to the established in the Porto Declaration:  to address water pollution or water efficiency, water scarcity or  flooding or any of the other concerns regarding the state of water resources within and beyond municipal boundaries."

Felicitas Kubala, Environment Mayor

Mannheim at work | Removing pollutants from the wastewater

The central sewage treatment plant, located north of Sandhofen, cleans an average of 96,000 m³ of wastewater from households, industry and trade from the entire urban area. The effluent flows through the sewage treatment plant within fourteen hours, before it is purified and filtered into the river Rhine: the water undergoes a mechanical and biological sewage treatment. Since July 2016, 90% of annual wastewater is treated with activated carbon; this fourth stage of cleaning facilitates the removal of substances such as residues of medicine, X-ray contrast agents or household chemicals. Through this process, the wastewater from the city of Mannheim is largely freed from pollutants, nutrients and trace elements before it flows into the river Rhine.
