Lisbon is one of the most water efficient cities in the world.The National Plan for the Efficient Use of Water aims for a level of 20% of  water loss by 2020 and it has  already been achieved. At present, loss of non-revenue water is at 8.7%.
Impressive results have been achieved through intensive work between Lisbon Municipality and EPAL, and the City is committed to maintain and improve this leading position throughout the coming years.Among Libson´s main water management related initiatives are the next ones:

Waste Water Recycling (2018-2020):

1-“Parque das Nações” Project
This project aims to replace underground water for irrigation use with the use of recycled treated water produced by the Waste Water Treatment Plant  Beirolas.

2-“Alcântara Valley” Project:
The Green Corridor, with an investment of €5 million, will consist in a restored area of 13ha containing 3km destined to the reuse of waste water.

3- Waste water reuse network:

This is a innovative project aims to conform the first urban waste water reusing  network for  irrigation and street cleaning purposes.

Lisbon Drainage Master Plan 2016-2030: 

With an investment of 170 millions of euros, the plan seeks to find out solutions to prevent floods, water infiltration, climate change and flood directive compliance.

Fighting for water losses:

WONE - Water Optimization for Network Efficiency:
A project aiming to detect and reduce water leakage and overconsumption, contributing significantly to water loss.

Lisbon's member of the UWA2030 Core Group

Maria Alexandra Henriques (Environmental Engineer at the Lisbon Municipality and Technical Support Officer of Green Structure, Environment and Energy Directorate)

Maria holds a MSc from the  Faculty of Science (University of Lisbon) in Sanitary Engineering. She is currently the Team leader of the Lisbon Urban Water Management  Plan and  responsible for the Lisbon Green Capital Award application.

Pedro Texeira (Environmental Engineer in the Laboratory for Bromatology and Water, at Lisbon Municipality)

Pedro Teixeira has a MSc from the Faculty of Science (University of Lisbon) in Human Biology and Environment and is currently a PhD student in Biology with specialization in Microbiology.



Quick facts on Lisbon

Location within country

Lisbon, Capital city of Portugal, is located on the right side of the Tagus river in the center of the country, approximately 300 km from the Algarve in the south and 400 km from the northern border with Spain. The Tagus River, the largest in the Iberian Peninsula, flows into the Atlantic Ocean through the Natural Reserve of the Tagus estuary, part of Lisbon,  where many bird species nest.

Source/s of water supply

2 surface sources and 4 groundwater sources. The main source is the Castelo do Bode reservoir, representing 87% of the water supplied.

Main utilities providing water and waste water services

EPAL is the company responsible for the extraction, treatment and distribution of the water in Lisbon.

The Municipality is responsible for the waste water management and the storm water drainage system.

Lisbon has three waste water treatment plants (Alcântara, Chelas and Beirolas) operated by Águas do Tejo Atlântico, S.A.
