September 2018 | 5th European Water Conference 2018 | Vienna, Austria

The European Commission's Directorate-General for the Environment together with the forthcoming Austrian EU Presidency are organizing the 5th EU Water Conference 2018 from 20-21 September 2018 at the Museum Quarter district in Vienna, Austria. More information here.

May 2018 | EU Green Cities Summit session | Brussels, Belgium

The European Commission in collaboration with ICLEI and EUROCITIES organized a session related to the Urban Water Agenda 2030 (UWA2030) which took place at the BluePoint Brussels on 24 May 2018 from 9:30-11:00.

The session, standing as "Cities raising the bar towards more sustainable water management in Europe" , was part of the 2018 EU Green Week , focusing on the theme of „Green Cities for a Greener Future“. More information here.

September 2017 | Mayors & Water Conference | Porto, Portugal

The Mayors & Water Conference 2017 took place in Porto, Portugal, on 29 September 2017 as part of the Porto Water Innovation Week. The conference was opened by Carlos Martins, Secretary of State of Environment of Portugal and Filipe Araújo, Porto City Councillor. Its programme focused on the potential of the Urban Water Agenda 2030 and the expectations of city politicians and practitioners concerning the benefits it should provide.

The conference also marked the launch of the Porto Declaration with which cities can express their support to the further development and implementation of the Urban Water Agenda 2030 process. By the end of the conference, the first 17 cities had signed the declaration.

May 2017 | Meeting of the Core Group of Cities| Brussels, Belgium

DG ENV of the European Commission invited the more than 20 cities of the UWA2030 Core Group to meet at its premises in Brussels on 16 May 2017. Chaired by Hans Stielstra, Deputy Head of Unit C1 (Clean Water), the meeting aimed at identifying how the Urban Water Agenda 2030 can best be placed into the political and institutional landscapes across the European Union and benefit both decision-makers at city and European Commission level.

October 2016 | Cities & Water Conference | Bratislava, Slovakia

The second Cities & Water conference took place in Bratislava, Slovakia on 25 October 2016. The conference was hosted by the City of Bratislava and organised with support of the European Commission and the Ministry of Environment of the Slovak Republic, under the auspices of the Slovak Presidency of the Council of the European Union and UNESCO.

Opened by Ivo Nesrovnal, Mayor of Bratislava, the conference focused on three main themes, namely:

  • Cities and water security;
  • Cities and river management; and
  • Cities and smart water management.

February 2016 | Cities & Water Conference | Leeuwarden, Netherlands

Under the leadership of the Mayor of Leeuwarden, Ferd Crone, and during the time of the Netherland’s EU presidency the first conference of Cities & Water took place. The event was hosted by the City of Leeuwarden, the Province of Fryslân and the European Commission on the 11 February 2016.

The programme focused on the following themes:

  • Water scarcity and water reuse
  • Water quality and the circular economy
  • Long-term sustainability of Infrastructure / ageing infrastructure
  • Flood protection & green infrastructures

Participants also provided feedback and further input to an early version of the Urban Water Agenda 2030.

It was also the occasion where the OECD’s Water Governance in Cities report was launched.

As one of the outcomes of the conference, several European cities expressed their interest in creating a collaborative platform to stimulate more effective, integrated water management in cities.
